Foster Kittens

All about Prysma's Foster Feline Household - PurrHaven!

The lives of various fostered kittens: Eva, born March 15 and abandoned the next day; Cory, orphaned at two weeks in mid-April and rejected by a foster-momcat April 17; Kate, Ryu, Zephyr, and Aurora, who were surrendered as "strays" on June 22 at roughly 4 weeks old; the "Sneezies", 6 3-month-old kittens who developed a respiratory infection; Beauty, Belinda, and Benny, a brave momcat and her two kittens.

So, 3 things:

1) It has been pointed out to me that a previous post sounded unpleasant towards the Kingston Humane Society. It wasn't intended that way. I was angry that carelessness came so close to costing the lives of kittens, and the post's tone came out rather harsh. I'm not very forgiving of negligence that causes harm to the innocent, but I'm not putting down KHS -- with limited resources, heart-breaking decisions are going on constantly and unavoidably. That post has been edited a bit to be less angry.

2) Sadly, I've had to send Beauty back to KHS. Her mild sneezes were escalating alarmingly, and the first time I heard Benny sneezing, well... at that point, the only way to protect the babies she loves so much was to get her away from them. She's a wonderfully loving lapcat, and young, and it's been decided that she'll go into the isolation ward and they'll try to cure her. With a little change of luck, poor unlucky Beauty might still have a happy ending.

Her babies, however, are staying here with us. They're on a small dose of meds and should recover completely in no time. They're active and playful and cuddly and inquisitive -- about like you'd expect from a pair of kittens 4 or 5 weeks old.

3) The Sneezies started sneezing again a day or so after I ran out of meds for them. They're back on the same thing again, and seem to be responding with surprising speed, given that there was some uncertainty whether it would be effective after an interruption. They're more and more energetic, and want in the worst way to come out and play with Cory, and he wants them to! But it's not happening. They are very beautiful and affectionate, and I'll be hoping they recover quickly and find wonderful homes.

I'm off tomorrow (Friday) since I've been asked to help out over the weekend, so I'll try to get pictures of the Sneezies and of Belinda and Benny.

Note: edited on Thursday, 6 Aug, to fix some things said in anger that should not have been said.

It's now Saturday. The amount of sneezing and wheezing has dropped quite dramatically -- in over two hours of sitting with them this morning, I only heard two sneezes, and two kittens had brief wheezy moments, and in over an hour tonight, no sneezes at all and only two brief wheezy moments.

Five are boys; only the one with the diamond face is a girl. I've learned that one litter was found as newborns with their mom and another sister, who's been adopted; their mom is a pretty dilute calico who's also up for adoption. The other litter was originally five, but the two girls from it were adopted, no mom with them.

I'd like to implore everyone who visits KHS, or other environments with many cats in close quarters, to be very careful to clean your hands between every cat you touch, and to be very, very careful to put any cat you handle back in the correct place. I've learned that people were putting them back in the wrong cages after handling them, which helped spread the cold much more quickly and thoroughly. The staff put a huge percentage of their time into cleaning to try to control the spread of any kind of infection, but cleaning cages won't help against direct contact. Please help keep the kitties safe!!!

The more love I give the Sneezies, the more they respond and give it right back, and the more they want it. When I spend time with them, I sit on the spare bed, and they more or less bury me in fur and purrs and cuddles.

The little diamond girl, whose name is Stella (although to me she looks more like a Jewel or something, but no point messing with names when they're only likely to be here another week), came up with a clever plan tonight: she ignored the gushifud the boys were wolfing down, so I picked her up and snuggled her, and sat on the bed holding her and petting her, but I didn't see anything wrong, and she was purring. Once the boys started coming up on the bed, she hopped down and went to eat. Smart little girl, getting some of my time without competition!

Monday, I brought the Silver Cuddle Puddle to the Humane Society. They got their second shots, dewormer, and microchips, and spent the morning in the front office charming everyone, Aurora especially.

Monday, during my first day of work placement, there was a bit of a situation. Two litters of three kittens each, less than 3 months old, who came down with a respiratory infection. In close quarters, especially with guests and some volunteers who are sloppy about hand sanitizer, disease spreads very fast. With nowhere to put them to keep from infecting other cats... they were going to be euthanized.

Well, both litters are now in our back bedroom, on meds. We're keeping them strictly separated from our kids, and are going to considerable lengths to keep infection odds as limited as possible.

Here are pics of them, and one video (1 min 43 secs).
