I love to read fantasy/science fiction (all-time favourite author is Tanya Huff, with Emma Bull and Terry Pratchett – Mercedes Lackey used to be, until a trans friend of a friend pointed out some rather nasty transphobic stuff that made me lose all respect forever). I also love to read non-fiction, especially about history, anthropology, archaeology, paleontology, animal behaviour, comparative religions, but I might be found reading about just about anything if I might need it for something I’m writing.
I love music, which tends to be somewhere in the range of 80s classic rock (Def Leppard, Depeche Mode, Glass Tiger, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper) to some of the modern stuff (Nickleback, Shakira, Matchbox 20/Rob Thomas, Garbage, Evanescence, Live) but some odd things turn up in my playlists sometimes that just happened to catch my attention.
I don’t really watch TV a lot, I find it takes up immense amounts of time and energy that I could better use for something more useful. There have been shows I’ve tried and enjoyed, but most of them have gone in bizarre directions that make me lose all interest (I’m looking at you, Supernatural), or end naturally (Sanctuary comes to mind). I adore the new Doctor Who, or at least I did – I tried my best to give Capaldi a chance, but between his rather bland acting and the mindbogglingly bad writing in the most recent episodes, I’m rapidly losing my enthusiasm. I’d much rather watch reasonably intelligent and reasonably unbiased non-fiction/documentaries.
I run a lolanimals site called Cheezland, which formed as a haven for the icanhascheezburger community when ICHC decided that a money grab mattered more than the opinions of the people who were responsible for the site’s activity level. (If you’re going to ask for feedback on changes, and it’s several thousand against and a handful in favour, you might consider listening…) I do enjoy captioned animal pics, if they’re clever and not mean, and some general silliness, and the playfulness and challenge of lolspeak (if you don’t know what I mean, there’s a page on lolspeak available in the menu bar).
Now and again I play computer games, but they tend to be a short-lived obsession at points when I need a bit of down-time to recover. I prefer world-builder or simulation games, or puzzle-based games of a few kinds. Computer RPGs often bore me, given that experience tends to come only from killing things. Table-top and live action RPGs can be a lot of fun, but it’s been some time since I had a group to play with.
There are several webcomics I enjoy following. My hands-down favourite is El Goonish Shive. I enjoyed the earlier comics of The Wotch, but less so recently. New posts from Gunnerkrieg Court, PS238 and Use Sword On Monster and Full Frontal Nerdity (all by the same creator!), and The Order of the Stick are all things I look forward to.
